Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

(ACT)

Living a life you value

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that helps individuals create a more meaningful, fulfilling life by changing how they relate to their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. Rather than focusing on eliminating distress altogether, ACT supports clients in developing skills to respond to life with greater psychological flexibility, openness, and intention, even when things feel difficult.

At it’s core, ACT is about learning how to make space for uncomfortable thoughts and feelings while still moving towards what truly matters to you. Many people find themselves stuck in cycles of avoidance - trying to control anxiety, push away intrusive thoughts, or escape uncomfortable emotions. While this can provide short-term relief, it often reinforces long-term suffering. ACT helps break this cycle by teaching you how to step back from these experiences, reduce their impact, and chose actions that align with your values.

ACT is built around six core processes that work together to increase psychological flexibility.

  1. Acceptance: Learning to allow thoughts and feelings to be present without fighting them.

  2. Cognitive Defusion: Changing our relationship to thoughts so the have less power over you.

  3. Mindfulness (Present Moment Awareness): Becoming more grounded in the here and now

  4. Self- as-Context: Developing a stable sense of self that is separate from your thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations.

  5. Values: Clarifying what truly matters to you

  6. Committed action: Taking meaningful steps guided by your values

How ACT Works

In therapy, ACT is an active and collaborative process. You’ll learn practical tools to help you observe your thoughts rather than get caught up in them, tolerate discomfort without reacting impulsively, and make intentional choices even in the presence of fear, uncertainty, or urges. ACT is not about “thinking positively” or getting rid of difficult emotions - it’s about changing our relationship with them so they no longer control your life.

ACT for OCD and Anxiety

ACT is highly effective for treating anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), especially when integrated with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Instead of trying to eliminate intrusive thoughts or reduce anxiety before taking action, ACT helps you learn how to coexist with uncertainty and discomfort. You’ll build the capacity to experience intrusive thoughts without engaging in compulsions, reduce avoidance behaviors. and response to anxiety with greater flexibility. Over time, this leads to a decrease in symptoms and increased confidence in your ability to handle distress while living a life aligned with your values.

ACT for Depression

For individuals experiencing depression, ACT focuses on reconnecting with meaning and purpose. Depression often leads to withdrawal, disconnection and a loss of motivation. ACT helps you gently re-engage with life by identifying your values and taking small, meaningful steps forward - even when motivation is low. By shifting the focus from “feeling better first” to “living better now”, ACT can help restore a sense of vitality and direction.

ACT for Substance Use

ACT is also effective in the treatment of substance use and addictive behaviors. Rathen than relying on willpower alone, ACT helps you understand the role substances play in avoiding or numbing difficult internal experiences. You’ll learn how to tolerate cravings, urges, and emotional discomfort without acting on them, while building a life that feels more aligned, fulfilling, and sustainable. This approach supports long-term recovery by addressing both behavior and the underlying emotional patterns that drive it.
